I always thought Iron is only needed when one is pregnant or lactating. Well, I knew that Iron supplement is needed when one is anemic. I learned something new. Today, Sangobion brought in UST OB-GYN Department Chairman Dr. Corazon Zaida N. Gamilla to talk about Women’s Health.

Iron is a vital mineral that we need to take. As part of all cells such as the protein hemogolobin, it carries oxygen from the lungs throughout the body. Iron is also a major component of many enzymes which help the body digest food and aid in several important bodily functions. When the body lacks enough iron, functioning of several organs will be affected.

signs of anemia

I saw how my sister got affected with iron deficiency. She was always tired. Iron deficiency is a condition that women should not ignore. Deficiency tends to cause women to experience fatigue which then will affect her ability to do physical work. If a woman is pregnant, she has increased risk for small or preterm babies. She will also lack focus and concentration and will look noticeably pale.

Even women over 50 like myself need to pump up iron the same way as lactating mothers. The iron daily requirement for women my age is 12 mg a day and 45 mg of folic acid. There are many sources of iron such as red meat, oatmeal, egg yolks, legumes, and nuts. And there is also iron supplements like Sangobion.

Sangobion helps restore the iron reserves in the body. Unlike Ferrous Sulfate, it is more easily absorbed by the body and has a less metallic aftertaste. It also contains Soribitol, a known anti-constipating agent since ordinary Ferrous Sulfate can contribute to constipation.

side effects of iron

Not only does Sangobion contain iron, it has vitamins and minerals including Vitamin C, Folic Acid, Vitamin B12, Copper Sulfate and Manganese Sulfate. The capsule is chocolate-scented.

Dr. Gamilla’s advice is to get a baseline data of iron levels to determine the need for iron supplements. She also encourages women to eat iron-rich food. To boost the amount of iron in your diet, try these foods:

Red meat
Egg yolks
Dark, leafy greens (spinach, collards)
Dried fruit (prunes, raisins)
Iron-enriched cereals and grains (check the labels)
Mollusks (oysters, clams, scallops)
Turkey or chicken giblets
Beans, lentils, chick peas and soybeans
Liver
Artichokes

If you eat iron-rich foods along with foods that provide plenty of vitamin C, your body can better absorb the iron.

The future is in your hands.
