I love guyabano! I use the pulp as the base for my juicing needs. Though I have heard that ” Guyabano tree, its fruit, leaves, stem, bark is a natural cancer cell killer”, I have not come across research studies to validate this. According to the website, guyabano.com, a ” scientific research published in the Journal of Natural Products in 1996, stated that a certain compound from the seed is selectively cytotoxic to colon adenocarcinoma cells (HT-29) in which it was 10,000 times the potency of Adriamycin (the commonly used chemotherapy drug).” I still have to read that study and similar researches . Studies by the Chemicals and Energy Division (CED) of the Department of Science and Technology’s Industrial Technology Development Institute (DOST-ITDI) show that guyabano generally has high flavonoid content. Flavonoids are phytochemicals that have been found to inhibit or even prevent the growth of viruses, carcinogens, and allergens. Traditionally, guyabano has been consumed by diabetics to lower their blood sugar, and tests showed that it even outperforms Metformin, the most commonly used maintenance drug of diabetics, in lowering blood glucose levels.
My friends brew dried guyabano leaves into tea because they swear by its healing properties. I recently discovered that there is a guyabano capsule available through my sister’s friend , Ian Atienza who is the owner and managing partner of Nutrifriendsnaturals.com . He gave me two bottles to try out.
